The Forest Preserve District of Cook County is Oak Forest's other premier attraction. The forest preserve operates six nature centers that highlight the natural diversity of the Chicago region. Each center offers offers interpretation of natural experiences unique to its site. Discover oak-hickory savanna at the Crabtree Nature Center, oak and maple forest at the River Trail Nature Center, prairies and sand dunes at the Sand Ridge Nature Center, moraine hills surrounding The Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center, the only rock canyon in Cook County at Camp Sagawau Environmental Education Center and the wildlife rehabilitation center at the Harold “Hal” Tyrell Trailside Museum. Interpretation displays of native plants and animals are presented at each museum and self-guided nature trails are also available. Professional naturalists are on hand to answer questions and nature programs are offered throughout the year.
Oak Forest is only 22 miles from downtown Chicago – therefore attractions in the area are practically endless. Chicago's Navy Pier is the city's most visited attraction. It features a 150-foot Ferris wheel, musical carousel, sightseeing boat tours, unique shops and restaurants and an 18-hole Chicago-themed miniature golf course. Indoor attractions at the Pier include the Chicago Museum and Funhouse Maze. Navy Pier is also home to an IMAX Theater, the Smith Museum of Stained Glass and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
